These upgrades are able to be used to boost a variety of purposes such as to increase the overall power of a group or individual unit. They can also have a major impact on gameplay.

Items can be upgraded by any NPC that is an upgrader in the game. These NPCs are located in the major questing areas or capital cities. Players can also find upgraders by visiting dungeons with high-level bosses, and by talking to NPCs in their garrisons for their faction.

The World of Warcraft item upgrade system allows players to increase the level of armor, weapons and trinkets. This process is very similar to the process of reforging gear in Mists of Pandaria and Warlords of Draenor however, instead of using the currency that is appropriate players must visit an NPC for upgrading items to complete the process.

Upgrades can be expensive particularly for armor and weapons. Based on the upgrade path you select, each upgrade can cost Crests or Valorstones. The costs are prohibitive for those who don't have the funds or are unwilling to grind.

The game lets you play a reroll of an upgraded item upgrader with a special tool in the items menu. Time

Each upgrade boosts the item's base stat a certain amount and gives a chance to get a bonus substat. The maximum level of upgrade for an item is determined by the item's level and its quality. Rare and Epic items can be upgraded up to level nine, while common items can only be upgraded to level six.
