Upgrades can boost the value of certain numeric stats on armor, weapons and rings. They also boost extra bonuses such as damage from PvE and crit chance.

For instance an item with the upgrade template ending in % will take on 3% attack damage every time it is upgraded (relative to its previous value).

The cost for upgrading items increases when they reach the current level of the item. The cost rises with item's level.

Components

Upgrade components can be added to weapons, armor and trinkets in order to give them a stat boost or add a bonus effect. They can be obtained through crafting, purchasing from vendors or trading with other players or looting. Some upgrades also have special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be inserted into any equipment that has a slot for them; the item must have been at the very least upgraded to blue level for a component to be inserted. In contrast to other mods components can only be used once and cannot be applied multiple times or replaced with upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a kind of upgrade component used to upgrade non-amulet legendary and ascending equipment, as as some non-ascended items. Enrichments and Infusions can be obtained by salvaging equipment that is ascended or completing a quest in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

An upgrade can be prefixed or a suffix, modifying the name of the equipment with which it is applied (for instance 'Canthan Armor Insignia' becomes Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). Some upgrades increase the Mark Rarity or Level of an item, which lets players to create stronger versions of the item using the smallest amount of Upgrade crystals than they need to reach the same level using standard methods.

A 'boost upgrade' can alter the attack or defense characteristics of a weapon or armor. Glyphs

In the endgame, you will often find that the best way to enhance your gear is by placing Glyphs. They are the only upgrade component that can be upgraded up to level 15 and offer an enormous boost to your power on the Paragon Board.

The system of upgrading items lets players increase the performance of specific items by putting upgraded components into them. This is often referred to as "upping". Each upgradeable item comes with an amount that determines its upgraded stats. Upgraded items can be leveled up to a maximum level of 385. Each level requires a different number of components to reach and the cost of upgrading increase as the item upgrades is leveled up.

Some upgrades require an ingredient to be activated. This ingredient is obtained from the completion of Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be bought from NPCs, or on the upgrade tab in crafting tables. Each Upgrade Recipe that is completed yields a certain number of Technology points. These points can be used to level up the item. Once enough points have been earned, the upgrade will be claimed and the additional bonuses will be added to the item.

When a player upgrades the equipment they have the original item is replaced by an item that is new. This means that the same armor piece will become an weapon or shield once upgraded. The new item also comes with its own bonus. This can be a disadvantage, as it can make the item more expensive, even if you don't require it.

The upgrades to items can be rerolled, if the player has enough tokens in order to do this. The item will be replaced with an entirely new item that has a level 1 basis and totally different bonuses. Requirements

Upgrading armor set pieces will also increase the base defense of the item, and upgrading weapon equipment will increase the base damage as well as the required strength and dexterity to meet the upgraded equipment's requirements.

Each item can be upgraded a maximum of five times, with the exception of hero gear that can be upgraded up to eight times. Each time you upgrade an object, it is at risk of failing. The rate of failure increases as you go over the maximum number. Failures will result in the item returning to its initial state, which requires the player to purchase more resources than if they had stopped upgrading after the maximum number.

If an item is not upgraded the experience bar on the bar for growth will be reset to zero. The item will also lose any bonuses it earned like chances to be crit, attack damage, or other effects (such as increased heal over time, or reloading speed). However, the player may continue to use the weapon or armor after the failure.

When an item is upgraded, the upgrades are applied in order from lowest to highest. The amount of resources needed to upgrade an item is determined on the rarity rating and the number of upgrade slots.
